Enclosed Car Shipping

Enclosed car shipping moves your vehicle inside a covered trailer with walls and a roof, rather than on an exposed open deck. No road spray, no stone chips, no weather, no visibility to anyone the vehicle passes. It costs more than open transport, and for the right vehicle it is the only sensible choice.

The honest version: most cars do not need it. A daily-driver sedan crossing the country on an open deck arrives fine. Enclosed transport earns its premium when the cost of a single stone chip exceeds the difference in price — which is true of a great many more vehicles than people expect, and untrue of most.

Genius Auto Trans is a licensed transport broker — USDOT 3674601, MC 1274912, Broker Property, ACTIVE with the FMCSA. We source enclosed transport from a vetted network of more than 10,000 carriers.

Which enclosed trailer your vehicle needs

This is the decision that actually matters, and it is the one nobody explains. Enclosed transport is not one thing.

Hard-side enclosed — rigid aluminium or steel walls. Maximum protection from impact, weather and prying eyes. The standard for exotics, concours cars and anything irreplaceable. Fewer on the road, so lead times run longer.

Soft-side enclosed — a rigid frame with heavy fabric sides. Full weather and debris protection, lighter, more available, generally cheaper than hard-side. Appropriate for high-value vehicles that are not museum pieces.

Liftgate versus ramp — this is the ground-clearance question. A hydraulic liftgate raises the vehicle horizontally onto the deck. A ramp requires the vehicle to drive or be winched up an incline. If your car has low ground clearance, an aggressive front splitter, or a lowered suspension, it needs a liftgate. Loading a low car up a ramp is how front lips get destroyed.

Single-vehicle versus multi-car enclosed — a dedicated trailer carries only your vehicle, moves on your schedule, and prices accordingly. Multi-car enclosed shares the trailer with two to seven others in separate positions, which is most of the enclosed market and most of the value.

Tell us the vehicle's ground clearance, whether it runs, and whether it has any modifications, and we will tell you which of the above it needs. This is not an upsell conversation — soft-side multi-car is the right answer more often than not.

What enclosed car shipping costs

We do not publish prices, price ranges or per-mile figures, and you will find competitors who do. A published number cannot know your vehicle, your lane, or enclosed carrier availability the week you ship — and enclosed capacity is genuinely tighter than open, so it moves more.

Enclosed or open

Choose enclosed car shipping when:

Choose open auto transport when the vehicle is a standard car, SUV, truck or dealer stock and exposure is not a material risk. It is cheaper, faster to book, and available on far more lanes.

Who ships enclosed

Our process

  1. Quote — vehicle, dimensions, ground clearance, condition, both locations, timing.
  2. Equipment match — we identify which trailer and loading method the vehicle requires before sourcing.
  3. Carrier assignment — operating authority and cargo coverage verified before your vehicle is assigned.
  4. Pickup and inspection — condition documented on the bill of lading with you present. On high-value vehicles, photograph it yourself as well.
  5. Transit — a contact point throughout.
  6. Delivery and inspection — condition documented again before you sign.

We are a licensed and bonded broker, not the carrier. Every carrier we assign is required to hold active cargo insurance, and we will provide that carrier's certificate on request. Full sequence on How It Works; payment terms on How to Pay.

Where we ship

Enclosed transport throughout the 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC. Alaska and Hawaii are not served.

Because enclosed carriers run fewer lanes than open ones, some routes take longer to cover. We will tell you honestly what the lead time looks like on your corridor rather than booking you and hoping.

Frequently asked questions

What is enclosed car shipping? Your vehicle travels inside a covered trailer with walls and a roof, fully protected from weather, road debris and view. It is the standard method for classic, exotic, collector and high-value vehicles.

How much more does enclosed transport cost than open? More, and how much more depends on trailer type, lane and timing rather than a fixed percentage. We quote your actual shipment instead of publishing a multiplier that will not hold on your route.

Is my car protected inside an enclosed trailer? We are a licensed and bonded broker, not the carrier. Every carrier we assign is required to hold active cargo insurance, and we will provide that carrier's certificate on request.

Can a lowered car be loaded into an enclosed trailer? Yes, and it needs a liftgate-equipped trailer rather than ramp loading. Tell us the ground clearance and any modifications at quote stage so the right equipment is sourced from the start.

How long does enclosed shipping take? Longer to book than open, because fewer enclosed carriers run fewer lanes. Transit itself is comparable. We give you a realistic lead time for your corridor at quote stage.

Will my car be the only vehicle in the trailer? Only if you book a dedicated trailer. Most enclosed transport is multi-car, carrying two to seven vehicles in separate positions — which is where most of the value in enclosed shipping sits.

Do you offer enclosed transport for non-running vehicles? Yes, with a winch-equipped enclosed carrier. It is a narrower pool, so tell us at quote stage.
