"Across country" is not one thing

This is the part almost nobody explains, and it is the part that determines your price.

Coastal-to-coastal runs — California to the Northeast, Washington to Florida — are long, but they follow corridors that carriers run constantly. High mileage, high carrier density, and prices that behave predictably.

Interior and cross-grain runs are frequently the harder problem despite being shorter. A shipment into a rural county 900 miles away can take longer to cover than a 2,800-mile coastal run, because fewer trucks pass through and a carrier has to justify the detour.

Lane density beats raw mileage. Two shipments of identical distance can price very differently depending on how many carriers routinely run each route. When you see a per-mile rate advertised, that is the variable it is hiding.

This is why we quote your shipment rather than publishing a per-mile figure. A rate card that does not know your corridor is not pricing your move; it is averaging somebody else's.

How to ship a car to another state

1. Get a quote. Vehicle year, make and model; whether it runs, rolls and steers; both cities; and the earliest date it is available.
2. Book. We start sourcing a carrier for your specific lane.
3. Carrier assignment. Every carrier we assign is required to hold active cargo insurance, and a certificate is available on request.
4. Pickup and inspection. The driver documents condition on the bill of lading with you present. Photograph it yourself too — dated, every angle.
5. Transit. You have a contact point throughout.
6. Delivery and inspection. Condition is checked against the bill of lading before you sign. Inspect in good light. Never sign clean if there is new damage.

What it costs to ship a car across country

No price table, no per-mile figure. You will find both published elsewhere, and neither can know your shipment. What moves your quote:

• Distance and lane density — the two together, not distance alone.
• Vehicle size, weight and running condition — a non-running vehicle needs a winch-equipped carrier, a much smaller pool.
• Open or enclosed — open transport shares the deck and is the economical standard; enclosed prices for protection.
• Timing flexibility — a wide pickup window gives us more carriers to work with than a fixed date. If the date cannot move, expedited auto transport is the honest thing to price.
• Season — see below; on long lanes this moves more than people expect.
• Access at both ends — a full-size hauler cannot enter every street. Where it cannot, we agree a meeting point in advance.

Season matters more on long lanes

On a short move, timing is a minor input. On a cross-country move it is one of the largest, because a carrier committing to a multi-day run is choosing your load over others.

• Summer is peak. Household relocation and university moves overlap, and carrier availability tightens across most long corridors at once.
• Early autumn adds student traffic on campus-bound lanes.
• Autumn and spring bring the snowbird movement — an enormous, predictable flow south then north again, concentrated on specific corridors within a few weeks.
• Late autumn and winter are generally the loosest period on most lanes, weather permitting.

The practical version: if your dates are flexible, ask us which week is cheaper on your corridor. If they are not, book earlier than you think you need to. Booking ahead of a seasonal wave saves more than any discount.

How long does it take

Long enough that you should plan around a window rather than a date. We do not publish transit-day figures for a national service, because the honest answer depends entirely on your corridor, and a company quoting you an exact number on standard transport is quoting you a hope.

Open or enclosed for a long haul

Distance is an argument for enclosed transport that people underrate: more days on the road means more exposure to weather and road debris. For a standard car that still does not justify the cost — open transport is how manufacturers move new stock coast to coast.

Where distance does change the calculation is at the top of the market.
