Seasonal car relocation is the twice-yearly move between two homes — south for the winter, north again in spring. It is the most predictable movement in this entire industry, and that predictability is the thing you can use.

Why the corridors tighten, and what to do about it

Hundreds of thousands of people make broadly the same journey within the same few weeks, in the same direction. That has a specific consequence most companies do not explain.

Snowbird demand is directional. In autumn, carriers heading south run full and then have to hunt for a load to justify the trip back. In spring it reverses. A truck that cannot fill the return leg prices the outbound leg to cover both — which is why rates on these corridors move so much more than distance alone would suggest.

Two practical conclusions:

Book ahead of the wave, not in it. For autumn southbound that means arranging it in late summer. For spring northbound, in the depths of winter. Booking before the surge routinely saves more than any discount, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the discount.

Flexibility is worth more here than anywhere else. A pickup window of several days lets us put your vehicle on a truck that is already running your corridor with space, instead of one being routed for you.

Book both legs in one conversation

If you know roughly when you are going and roughly when you are coming back, say so at the first call. Nothing is locked in and there is no obligation, but it means the return is planned before the spring rush rather than during it.

We do not require it, and we do not advertise a round-trip product. It is simply the thing that makes the second half of the year easier.

Which transport type

Open transport is the standard and most economical choice, and right for the great majority of seasonal moves.

Enclosed transport makes sense if the vehicle is a classic, a convertible you would rather not have weathered, or anything where the finish matters. A number of seasonal residents keep exactly that kind of car at one of the two homes.

Access at both ends

Seasonal destinations are disproportionately gated communities, retirement villages, condominium complexes and resort developments — and a great many of them restrict commercial vehicle entry, have height barriers, or simply have no road wide enough for a full-size hauler.

Preparing a car that has been standing

The vehicle at the far end has often sat for five or six months, which creates its own list:

• Check whether it starts before collection day, or tell us it may not. A non-running vehicle needs a winch-equipped carrier — routine, but only if we know.
• Battery — the usual casualty of a long layup.
• Tyre pressures, which fall over months of standing.
• Roughly a quarter tank of fuel.
• Wash it, so the condition inspection actually records something.
• Remove personal items. Federal regulation prohibits carriers from moving household goods in a shipped vehicle and cargo insurance does not cover them.
• Disable toll tags and alarms.
• Photograph it, dated, from every angle.

Being there on the day

Someone must be present at collection and delivery to inspect the vehicle and sign the bill of lading — and on a seasonal move, you are frequently not at the far end yet.

Nominate a neighbour, family member, property manager or community office, and brief them properly. They are signing the condition record, so they need to know to inspect carefully in good light and to write down anything they find rather than signing clean.

The carrier gives 3 to 24 hours voice notification before delivery, so make sure the numbers we hold are ones that will be answered.

What if the car will not start after sitting all winter? Tell us at quote stage. A non-running vehicle needs a winch-equipped carrier, which is a smaller pool and a different price. It is routine — the problem is only discovering it at the kerb.

Can I ship more than one vehicle? Yes, and on the same lane it prices better per unit than separate bookings. Many seasonal households ship a car and a golf cart or motorcycle together.

Is there a discount for seniors? Yes, 10%. Mention it when you request the quote so it is applied to the price you are given.

Should I ship open or enclosed? Open for most seasonal moves. Enclosed if the vehicle is a classic or convertible, or anything where the finish matters more than the saving.

Do you store the car between legs? No. We arrange transport between the two addresses you give us.
